Why We Started
Swadeshi Traveller Community

India is extraordinary. Most people who visit it come back feeling they saw it from behind a window rather than inside it. We started Swadeshi Traveller Community to fix that.

How It Started

From a Frustrated Traveller to India's Most Trusted Small-Group Operator

In 2017, Swadeshi Traveller Community's founder, Bhanu Prakash Bandharu, returned from a group tour of Coorg that should have been extraordinary. The destination was right. The itinerary looked right on paper. But the group had 28 people, the "local guide" was a part-timer who'd read a few Wikipedia articles, and the estate property advertised as a "heritage plantation stay" was a mid-range hotel with plastic lawn furniture. He came back more frustrated than inspired.

He spent the next year talking to people who ran small-group tours in New Zealand, Portugal, and Peru — operators who had built something genuinely different from the coach-tour industry. The model was consistent:small groups, exceptional local knowledge, properties selected for their character rather than their star rating, and a philosophy that a tour should feel like something you couldn't have organised for yourself, not merely like logistics you'd outsourced.

Swadeshi Traveller Community launched in January 2018 with two departures: a Coorg Coffee Trail and a Kerala Backwaters Circuit, both capped at 14 people, both built around estate stays and local guide partnerships that took six months to develop. The first 28 seats sold by word of mouth before any marketing spend. The second batch sold in four days.

First Coorg Coffee Trail departure, January 2018 — 11 travellers, one plantation bungalow, and a Kodava family dinner that nobody had planned on.

Since then, Swadeshi Traveller Community has run more than 380 departures across 28 itineraries, taking 4,200+ travellers to destinations across India — from the coffee hills of Karnataka and Kerala's backwaters to itineraries further afield. The founding principle hasn't changed. We cap every group at 14. Our guides are born and raised in the regions they guide. The estate stays and boutique properties in our itineraries are personally reviewed before they're included. And we answer the phone.

India is not a single place. It's a subcontinent of distinct cultures, landscapes, cuisines, and languages, and no two regions travel the same way. The coffee hills of Coorg have nothing in common with the backwaters of Alleppey, which have nothing in common with the mountain valleys further north. We think the best way to travel a country like this is slowly, with people who know it — and in a group small enough that you can actually hear the guide speaking, stop when you want to stop, and eat at the table with the family rather than at the buffet.

That's the whole philosophy. We've tried not to complicate it.

"We think the best way to travel India is slowly, with people who know it — and in a group small enough that you can actually hear the guide."

How We Work

The Principles We Don't Compromise On

Small Groups, Always

Every departure is capped at 14 people — not as a marketing claim but as a hard operational limit. When a tour reaches 14, it closes. At 14, a guide can actually teach, a vehicle doesn't feel like a bus, and a restaurant table accommodates everyone without a second reservation. Past 14, the experience changes category. We don't do that.

Local, Not Outsourced

Every guide we work with was born and raised in the region they guide. Our Coorg guide grew up on a Kodava coffee estate. Our Kerala guide is a certified Ayurveda practitioner from Thrissur. Our Tamil Nadu guide studied classical Carnatic music and has spent fifteen years in temple towns. We never sub-contract guiding to an agency — if we don't personally know the guide, they don't lead our tours.

Stays With Character

We don't place travelers in chain hotels. Every property in our itineraries has been personally stayed in by a member of our team — heritage plantation bungalows, boutique houseboats, family-run homestays. The selection criteria are: is the property genuinely of its place, not interchangeable with something in any other city? If yes, we consider it. If not, we don't, regardless of star rating.

Honest, Not Just Available

We tell people honestly when a tour isn't right for them — if you're expecting luxury hotels, our mid-range packages will disappoint; if you want a fully private itinerary, our shared departures aren't what you're looking for. We'd rather lose a booking than have someone come back unhappy. Our 4.9 Google rating is a function of this policy, not in spite of it.

★ 4.9 / 5.0
Google Verified Reviews

1,847 verified reviews on Google Business, averaging 4.9/5. Google's review system requires reviewers to have a real Google account and cannot be paid for or gamed the way some other rating platforms can be. A 4.9 rating at this volume is genuinely rare and is the result of 380+ departures, not a managed reputation campaign.
