The Complete First-Timer's Guide to Planning a Multi-Destination Trip Across India

Swadeshi Traveller Team·27 July 2026

Planning a trip that touches more than one destination sounds exciting right up until you're staring at a spreadsheet trying to figure out how many nights belong where.

Start With How Much Time You Actually Have

Work backward from your total number of days, not forward from your wishlist. Every destination you add should come with a night count already subtracted from the total — otherwise the list grows indefinitely and nothing gets enough time.

Group Destinations by Region, Not by Wishlist Order

The order things go on your list rarely matches the order that makes sense on a map. Grouping nearby places together cuts down on backtracking and long transit days that eat into actual sightseeing time.

  • List every place you want to see first, with no order

  • Group them by region on a map

  • Assign nights based on total trip length, not per-place wishes

  • Leave at least one buffer day for delays or a place you loved more than expected

It takes longer than picking places in the order they came to mind, but it's the difference between a trip that flows and one that feels like a checklist.
